Valencia City Council has upgraded its video recording system, enhancing public access to city surveillance footage with the help of Lanaccess technology.

In Valencia, over 700 cameras of various IP generations monitor traffic across a 300-kilometre road network. The goal of these cameras is to “facilitate the mobility of road users,” as explained by Giuseppe Grezzi, the Councillor for Sustainable Mobility, on the City Council’s website. This operation is managed from the Traffic Management Centre, where the Lanaccess video recorders are also located.

Necessary upgrade

Before introducing our technology, Valencia used video recorders mounted on PCs with proprietary technology. These systems were nearing obsolescence and frequently malfunctioned. Finding replacement parts was difficult and the equipment took up considerable space while consuming a lot of energy. In addition, image compression was inefficient.

Adapted, robust and durable technology

Lanaccess video recorders are specifically designed for video management, making their architecture more efficient:

  • Their compact design means they occupy only one third of the space of the previous systems.
  • The risk of breakdowns is minimal because the recorders only include essential components, which also reduces their power consumption.
  • Cameras are connected via 4G or fibre optics, requiring less bandwidth with the new recorders.

In addition to operational efficiency, the new technology is cyber-secure. Lanaccess video recorders have been free from cyberattacks since their inception over twenty years ago.

The City Council enhances transparency

To improve public access to information, the City Council has enabled live streaming from some cameras. This is made possible through Lanaccess’s streaming server. The footage is available to the public via a web portal that displays all fixed cameras, as well as the Valencia al Minuto [Valencia by the Minute] portal, which shows the city’s main roads. These servers also support:
  • The Traffic Management Centre
  • The Valencia Local Police at the CISE (Centre for Security and Emergency Information)
  • The EMT (Municipal Transport Company) information centre
