Success Story: Enhancement of Video Surveillance at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona

Hospital Clínic Barcelona

The Hospital Clínic is more than just a hospital. An award-winning public institution, it brings together two hospitals that offer almost every medical specialty, two centres specialised in biometric research and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Barcelona, among others. Amadeu Bergés has been responsible for this institution’s security for over 15 years, a period during which he has striven to constantly improve the video surveillance infrastructure with the support of the solutions and service delivered by Lanaccess.

In 15 years of technological evolution, we have gone from Lanaccess to Lanaccess.

Constant evolution

One of the responsibilities of the hospital’s head of security, Amadeu Bergés, is to improve operational efficiency in security matters. Among the first improvements he effected was the upgrading of the CCTV cameras, which at the time consisted of equipment we had manufactured ourselves a number of years earlier. “In the process of upgrading the CCTV equipment, we switched from Lanaccess to Lanaccess”, Amadeu tells us. The new equipment introduced two major improvements, the head of security points out. On the one hand, “the solution is much more stable, the equipment is much more robust. The operating system has fewer mobile components and is therefore less affected by power outages”, according to Amadeu. The power supply provided by UPS systems is limited. Therefore, grid-connected devices, such as video recorders, must deliver maximum performance while consuming minimal power. The second major benefit of the new devices is that they take up less space, something that the hospital values. For image processing itself, “we used to need a whole rack; now we only need seven or eight units”, claims the head of security. Cybersecurity is also critical for healthcare facilities, a need covered by Lanaccess’s video recorders. We have not experienced any cyberattacks since we started manufacturing equipment more than 25 years ago.

VMS

The hospital controls the CCTV using video management software created by us. Via their VMS, Amadeu has access to the video stream, can download images and monitors the technical status of the equipment connected. Embedded security devices by other manufacturers are also configured and managed from the software.

Noteworthy features

“360-degree cameras are the breakthrough for me”, maintains Amadeu, “not only is the visual field wider, but these cameras are also more discreet”.
A security camera with a fisheye lens has the widest lens there is. Since it is a 360-degree view, the result is a distorted circular image that shows everything happening around the camera.
Lanaccess software can reinterpret images to display them in a flat panoramic view or multiple views, as demonstrated at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. This creates the impression of having multiple cameras installed in a single space, each pointing in different directions.
Amadeu envisions specific clinical applications: “I think these systems are particularly useful in a psychiatric setting, for example, where doctors need to observe a patient’s behaviour in a controlled environment.”
When it comes to the hospital’s access control systems, the Dorlet application enables the head of security to monitor the cameras integrated with the Lanaccess system. This streamlines operations and improves visibility in critical areas. Amadeu points out that one such area includes the cabinets where tablets and smartphones are stored.

The hospital uses these devices to facilitate communication between patients in delicate health and their loved ones: “The magnetic door contact signals the camera to start recording a few seconds before the door opens. If the cabinet door remains open, the camera continues recording uninterrupted.” This integration helps prevent oversights, theft and fraudulent use of the devices.

Analytics

Video analytics help protect people and facilities by alerting to intrusions and loitering. They also improve operational efficiency by monitoring visitor flow and providing customised statistical data, such as consultation waiting times. “Counting people used to be done manually with a clicker, someone would go around pressing the button,” recalls Amadeu. “Now, a machine can do it by counting what it identifies as heads.” Minimising system errors is crucial for optimising operations. The Lanaccess algorithm analyses, detects and alerts about objects and events using deep learning neural networks. This algorithm replaces traditional pixel-based analytics, thereby significantly reducing the likelihood of errors. Video analytics have also become more cost-effective, making them accessible to the healthcare sector. “When I first arrived at the hospital, it was a very exclusive technology used only in specific fields, and I found it magical,” states Bergés. With an integrated and adaptable video security solution designed for hospitals, we help these institutions gain better visibility of their facilities and connected equipment. Amadeu values our technology and support service for their reliability: “I always get answers,” he says. “Whether I am in Hospitalet or Madrid, I can always count on their support. That’s why we chose Lanaccess.”
